My dreams nearly always include words. Literally, words that appear like someone writing on a big invisible billboard in front of me. I’m usually in some kind of mystery, a state of wondering or in need of answers, when words start to appear in front of me like someone’s writing them out in real time. I never wake up remembering exactly what’s been written, but I always remember feeling almost desperate to stay connected to the revelation – especially when I start to wake up. I’m not sure what that means but it sounds a lot like someone trying to tell me something! Don’t you think? Anyway… I thought journaling in a ‘stream of consciousness’ format might reveal something about my dreams. They always read like a live-in-the-moment to do list. Here are the latest ones….

I’ve been ‘pushed’ by coaches, trainers, bosses, teachers, peers, co-workers, friends and leaders. I’ve been pulled by temptation, deception, arrogance, ignorance and foolishness. But the question came up recently in a small Bible Study group: What would it take to experience a deep longing for God as a regular part of your life? The kind of longing you might have for water if you’d been stranded in the desert for a few days. When have I EVER had a deep longing for God when I wasn’t in the middle of a crises or tragedy? What would it take to experience that kind of longing as a REGULAR part of my life?

I started thinking of times when I knew I was about to do something way bigger than I was ready for (giving a speech in front of 100+ people, my first job, initiating that hard conversation, walking in, walking out, starting over or strapping on wings I’d never used before and going back in). All these events came with a big dose of Humility. Me, KNOWING that I wasn’t capable by myself, standing at the foot of the cross saying: ‘God, I’m not going in there without you, so this is yours, I’ll do whatever you’ll have me do’. That’s when I know He’s got to show up. I need a miracle. So in order to experience this deep kind of longing for God as a regular part of my life…. I’m going to have to deliberately put myself on the edge of comfort. The edge of reason. The edge of the next biggest thing that’s ever happened in my life. Stepping into His yoke (and I like to think of that like a hang-glider), grabbing onto trust…. and taking the first jump. If I really let go, I will instantly be guided by supernatural wisdom that extends way beyond the confines of this earth. It’s not about me. It’s about the trip and everyone I meet along the way. It’s about who I become in the process. The person God intended when he thought me up in the first place.

Below are some pictures from a recent trip: hiking Long’s Peak, CO, a 14,000 ft mountain, just after 3-4′ of snowfall…  I was extended, stretched and challenged… I made it to the top… and I was happy. I want more of that.

Light the Night – Let the party melt into easy conversation on the deck with the flicker of candle light. Stow votives, extra tea lights & matches in a basket close to the back door to bring out at dusk. Candle light during hot summer nights offers the same effect of a fireplace in the winter – it softens the mood, warms the heart and brings people together.

A Special Reserve – Some of our most intimate conversations between friends and family happen after the bustle of the party is over. Towards the end of a social affair, people tend to be more relaxed, have settled into their comfort zone and let their guards down a little. Have something ‘special’ in reserve for your guests who linger. Try sparkling cider, dessert wine, fresh fruit, sorbet or frozen grapes. Anything to foster an atmosphere of ‘plenty’. In essence you’re saying, ‘I value you and want to connect with you”.

Join Your Own Party - A little advanced planning will let you enjoy your guests and not be stuck in the kitchen while everyone else is having a good time. Cut, slice and arrange what you can on platters way ahead of your guests arriving. The day before (or early the day of) your party, go ahead and set the table with all the candles, linens and serving dishes you are planning to use. Label each platter or dish with sticky notes so you know what is going to go where. Make sure you have enough serving utensils laid out appropriate for each dish. You don’t want to be pilfering through your cupboards at the last minute looking for that tray you know you got as a wedding gift! With this done – all you have to do is bring your prepared hot or chilled food out and set in its place – voila! Instant party.
